Conference Participation

November 02, 2022

On November 2, 2022, four members of the Canadian Team (Anna Purkey, Christiana Sagay, Dagmar Soennecken and Delphine Nakache) and one member of the Norwegian team (Jessica Schultz) presented a round table discussion at the Canadian Association for Refugee and Forced Migration Studies (CARFMS) 22 conference titled “Vulnerability and the Legal Protection of Migrants: A Critical Look at the Canadian Context”.

The session contributed to the understanding of the meaning, practical consequences and legal implications of “vulnerability” for migrants seeking legal protection in host countries.

Members of the Canadian team presented findings drawing from their analysis of 100 interviews with civil servants, “on the ground” practitioners and migrants to the understanding of vulnerability in Canadian law, policy and practice in the context of migration. The member of the Norwegian team offered a comparative lens to the understanding of vulnerability between Canadian and Norwegian law, policy and practice.

These presentations were based upon the second Norwegian VULNER research report as well as the second series of results from a Canadian research project funded by the Canadian Research Council SSHRC/CRSH and the Fonds de recherche du Québec—Société et Culture (FRQSC) as part of the VULNER project.
