VULNER Webinar. Contested Vulnerabilities: Refugees’ Experiences of Humanitarian Programs

Join us on 27 April 2023, from 13.00 to 14.30, for the webinar Contested Vulnerabilities: Refugees’ Experiences of Humanitarian Programs. The event is organized by Sophie Nakueira, leader of the WP on Africa, with the support of Population Europe (Kate Dearden).

Standardised vulnerability assessments are used globally by UNHCR and its partners to determine humanitarian needs, as well as, among other things, who is eligible for resettlement from refugee camps in poorer, refugee hosting countries like Uganda, to countries in the Global North.

How do the vulnerability categories work in situations of resource limitations? What are refugees’ concrete experiences of vulnerability in Uganda? How do migrants negotiate, resist, or contest vulnerabilities categories? How effectively do humanitarian aid programs address the protection needs of refugees more generally.

Scholars and practitioners will share insights that respond to these questions from their respective fields. The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session moderated by Marie-Claire Foblets, Director of the Department of Law & Anthropology at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle, Germany.
