VULNER Webinar. Contested Vulnerabilities: Refugees’ Experiences of Humanitarian Programs

On 27 April 2023, the webinar Contested Vulnerabilities: Refugees’ Experiences of Humanitarian Programs was organized by Sophie Nakueira, leader of the WP on Africa, with the support of Population Europe (Kate Dearden).

 

Standardised vulnerability assessments are used globally by UNHCR and its partners to determine humanitarian needs, as well as, among other things, who is eligible for resettlement from refugee camps in poorer, refugee hosting countries like Uganda, to countries in the Global North.

 

Scholars and practitioners shared insights on the following questions: How do the vulnerability categories work in situations of resource limitations? What are refugees’ concrete experiences of vulnerability in Uganda? How do migrants negotiate, resist, or contest vulnerabilities categories? How effectively do humanitarian aid programs address the protection needs of refugees more generally.
